“Open the book and follow the hole.” In Peter Newell’s The Hole Book (1908), the reader is able to trace a bullet’s path with a literal hole on each page as it wreaks havoc across various scenes. Newell’s illustrations charmed a generation of children with his whimsical illustrations long before Richard Scarry and Dr. Seuss. He also illustrated many works by Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, and Lewis Carroll.
